Student work: Corals in Crisis

by Harry Stone (Ravensbourne, London)

Pages from Harry Stone-2

For the second year project “Breaking the News” the Graphic Design students at Ravensbourne were asked to analyse newspapers and find a back-story with a social, environmental or political angle. Harry Stone decided to focus on coral reefs. Researching different articles and data sets Harry experimented with different forms of data visualisation, particularly using different map designs, trying different angles of the map to show the location of coral reefs.

Instead of using conventional pie charts, Harry experimented with the shapes of coral reefs implementing them into the design. For example using the structure of the coral flowers to create a section of the pie chart. The final outcomes were tested on a range of coloured paper stocks.
