Student project: ComplexCity of Seoul

by Kichang Kim (FHNW HGK Basel, Switzerland)

Kichang Kim chose a personal topic for his response to the brief Tangled Tissues. Seoul is Kim’s home city, where many significant events and memories remain: meeting his wife, his son being born, graduating and working for many years.

Kichang Kim explored these affectionate directions in juxtaposition with cultural, historic and geographic information on the city. Seoul’s history dates back more than 2000 years and its urban structuring of districts is complex variable in size and assorted in age. Through analysis of these facts opportunities using overlay and collaging techniques were examined. Language as symbols, and symbols as language were explored successfully in combination with translucent materials.
